Small towns are full of the most interesting characters. Take a trip to visit your local watering hole - and you are bound to spot the towns most colourful personalities.
You will be greeted by a smile from a cheerful barlady most of the time. She is the gatekeeper to all the news, stories and events.
My travels have taken me on a whirlwind adventure. There is a small town tucked away in the plattelande of the free state South Africa. It's a town that at first impression by this big time city girl to be a place that God has forgotten. However upon closer inspection you find that its the one place where pride and warm hearts are found. I'm currently visiting a little place called Brandfort.
At the counter you will find a boisterous character like Oom Thyse the big bear type full of stories, smiles and jokes. Then you get the retired oomie like Oom Jan that comes same time each day for his glass of coke.
In these towns the folks each have their unique way of greeting and chatting. An evening is never complete without a visit from your local political ward councellor and the avid golfer and hard working boer thats come in from a full day in the field. On cold winter nights as the drinks move on so does the conversation, laughs and merriment.
You will always feel at home with a crowd like this.
